Who We Are

Our History

Powell Technologies, Inc. began in 1992 when Michael Powell took on the position of IT Director for Powell Companies, which currently consists of six offices in three states and employs over 500 individuals. At that time, there was no network to speak of. Soon thereafter, company president Jim Powell charged Mike with the task of creating one...with three simple, yet demanding stipulations:

The company was going to decide what needs the network would meet.
The network had to be up all the time, with no exception.
The network had to be as simple and cost-effective as possible.

At the time, Mike thought these demands would prove to be extremely difficult to satisfy, but after several years of refinement, Mike developed a premier network solution that more than exceeded the company's expectations. For Powell Companies, the resulting network proved to be a profitable entity that serviced the very needs of the business.

After a decade of successful results, Mike began to perceive the need of other businesses in this region for such an answer. He, along with his associate Kristopher Ting, decided to offer this answer to other businesses in the community, so they formed Powell Networking Group. They later changed the company name to Powell Technologies, Inc., but their goals and mission remained the same...to provide their clients with the highest level of computer networking service and support, and to do so with integrity, reliability, and efficiency.

Our Staff

Michael Powell - President / Director

Michael Powell was born in Knoxville, TN and moved to the Tri-Cities with the early growth of Powell Construction. He graduated from Science Hill High School and attended East Tennessee State University where he graduated with a Bachelors degree (1986) and a Masters degree (1989), both in Computer Science.

After graduating, Mike spent two years with ZFX in Kingsport, TN producing computer animations for TV commercials. In 1992, he began his career with Powell Companies, developing custom software applications for their engineering department. Mike founded Powell Networking Group (later becoming Powell Technologies, Inc.) in 2002 due to the success he had experienced.

Mike is committed to his marriage to India, and is devoted to two children, Michael and Whitney. Mike has a strong and growing relationship with Jesus Christ that he develops daily. He is very disciplined in his spiritual life as well as his physical life, having studied Karate for 16 years. He is a member of the Johnson City / Washington County Chamber of Commerce and serves on the Community Development Committee.

Kristopher Ting - Assistant Director / Senior IT Technician

Kristopher Ting was born in New York, NY and was transplanted to East Tennessee at an early age. He graduated with honors from Sullivan East High School, and went on to obtain a Bachelors degree in Computer Science at East Tennessee State University in 1999.

Kris has worked for Powell Companies since 1995, beginning as a draftsman for their engineering department and then migrating to the position of Senior IT Systems Technician for the entire organization in 1999. In addition to being co-founder of Powell Technologies, Inc., he currently serves as the Assistant Director. Kris has been registered as a Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP) since 2003, and is constantly gaining hands-on experience in the IT field with his position at Powell Technologies, Inc.

A devoted family man, Kris has been happily married to Kimberly and they have three wonderful children - Emily, Conner, and Julia. He is a dedicated Christian who is active in his local church and community. When not managing networks, Kris enjoys outdoor activities such as hiking and sports, and leisurely pursuits like photography and playing with his kids.

Sonja Boling - IT Technician / Engineering Assistant

Sonja Boling was born in Elizabethton, TN and has lived in East Tennessee all of her life. She is a graduate of Sullivan East High School and has attended East Tennessee State University, Northeast State Community College, Virginia Highlands Community College and Bailey Computing College.

Sonja began her working career with L.M. Berry & Company in the advertising department. In 1981, she began working for CIGNA, a large healthcare organization with a claim processing office located in Bristol, TN. She has over 22 years of experience with CIGNA and 8 years of experience with CIGNA Systems as a network administrator responsible for all network maintenance, upgrades and desktop support for 385 desktops and 100 eWorkers. In addition, she provided technical support for 2 computer labs within Johnson City Schools and worked as a technician in pc projects for Dell Computers. Presently, she provides technical support for Powell Technologies, Inc. and administrative/technical support for the Johnson City engineering department of Powell Companies.

Sonja is happily married and enjoys music, painting and spending time with her husband and family.
